Compliance and Privacy: Speak Up Safely Policy

The Office of Compliance & Business Conduct exists to ensure that Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth and Beth Israel Deaconess HealthCare remain in compliance with:

  • Federal and State laws, statutes, rules and regulations
  • Insurance company rules and regulations and
  • Organizational policies and procedures

Anyone who has a concern regarding actual or suspected wrongdoing is encouraged to report it immediately. Examples include but are not limited to: fraud, waste, abuse, the filing of false claims, unethical behavior, or privacy or data breach. Knowing of a violation and failing to report it may result in an individual being held party to a claim.

Fraud is an intentional deception or misrepresentation which results in an inappropriate gain. Examples are: Billing for services knowingly not provided, altering medical or research records to falsely obtain coverage, payment, or outcomes, falsifying documents, withholding information about additional health care coverage, identity theft, and patient recruiting.

Waste is overuse and careless spending of funds or resources. Examples are: duplicate testing, performing unnecessary diagnostic procedures, failing to properly prepare the patient, prescribing medication or therapy for longer periods of time than is necessary, overstocking of medical supplies resulting in spoilage.

Abuse is unsound medical or business practices that create unnecessary health care costs. Examples are: excessively or incorrectly charging for services, providing unnecessary health care services, discrimination, and failing to be properly informed, or ignoring warning signs that indicate a problem is or may be present.

Our hospital is dedicated to preventing false claims and statements and we honor whistleblower protections. We also recognize the role of both federal and state laws in preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse. Everyone is encouraged to Speak Up Safely! All BID Plymouth staff are encouraged to visit the Speak Up Safely tab on the BID Plymouth iPortal to learn more. You will find additional resources for reporting, such as the Meditech Event Reporting System. If you reach any of the resources listed, we will make sure the right person responds.
